Where does the FP stand in relation to supply- and demand-oriented help?

The Functional Profile is a ‘needs-based assessment’. It helps look at what is required to improve a child’s functioning.

What is the parents’ reaction to the process of creating an FP?

Parents sometimes find listing all their concerns difficult, but they do also feel that they’re being taken seriously. The FP is really helpful for the purpose of gaining insight into all concerns that are present.

How are parents involved, and when do you apply the FP?

Parents answer the same questions as teachers or care providers. It is usually the teacher that first involves the parents with the FP. By laying the completed profiles side-by-side, a thorough overview is formed of concerns and opportunities that are present.

Can you use the FP to perform a group analysis of a class?

Combining all completed profiles allows for the possibility of performing a group analysis. This results in a clear overview of concerns that exist within a group.

Is it possible to collect data by using a method other than the FP?

There are many ways to collect information, but the FP will save a lot of time spent in meetings, and it is the only system that provides a comprehensive overview.

Do parents sometimes have trouble filling out a profile?

Some parents will need extra assistance when completing a profile. This is comparable to what would be needed for other questionnaires.

What can teaching staff learn from the FP?

A teacher, but also a care provider, is stimulated to answer questions that would otherwise not have occurred to them. The ‘expandable’ windows will help you look in a detailed manner. The ‘I’ button will help you understand the questions asked.

Added value for the school administration

The FP offers insights about the student body, facilitating better planning. The FP can be employed to make better use of existing resources. The ability to find the core of the problem quickly translates to a reduction in workload for the team.

You’ve completed the FP: how to proceed

Processing a completed FP calls for a skilled analysis. There is training available, and it can also be purchased as a service from YOEP. The end product is a powerful report containing comprehensive description, analysis and advice. The advice given is aimed at the entire system of care surrounding the child, including teachers, parents and other aspects of the child’s care environment.

Prevent escalation

The FP allows you to know what is wrong, which helps start a dialog. That can prevent the escalation of (behavioral) problems, and fosters connectedness over isolation.

  • Common insight in existing problems
  • Handholds for providing support
  • All involved parties maintain communication

The strength of cooperation

Cooperation in youth care means: sharing information and knowledge about the child’s functioning.  The FP makes that possible.

  • Privacy
  • Speak the same language
  • Cover all relevant fields:
  • Parents, (health)care, guidance, well-being, school…

The FP applied to group analysis

Every group FP can be used for group analysis. It provides a clear representation in percentages of the greatest common factor with regard to concerns that are present across the group. It is also possible to further analyze the group in terms of demographic data, which are used for group reporting.

A primary school principal discusses the FP

The duty of care that schools have to provide their students with an education tailored to best suit their needs does not make the school’s job any easier. The role of the school in a child’s upbringing is being expanded, which increases the need for cooperation between parents and school, and the FP facilitates that cooperation. Parents feel taken seriously and teachers are given a better insight into the educational and supportive needs of the child.

Anne Niehe discusses the role of the FP at her primary school

  • The FP puts words to feelings
  • Maintaining a dialog with parents
  • Parents and teachers speak the same language
  • Promote development of expertise for teachers
  • Make clear what the child needs
The FP in the context of education
  • It makes the needs of the child even more clear
  • The greatest benefit of the FP is that it keeps the dialog with parents open
  • The FP augments the teacher’s own abilities; they recognize the value of the FP
